Asian American Therapy: Austin & Statewide in Texas

Therapy for AANHPIs in Texas (Austin, Round Rock, Pflugerville, Brushy Creek, Liberty Hill)

Hello! I’m here! I’m excited to introduce myself and announce I’m licensed in Texas. I feel as though I should be playing Beyonce’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” on this page to celebrate. My doors are open to you, dear Texans!

What I offer: impactful, high quality virtual psychotherapy for Asian American adults. I’ve written a lengthy summary of the reasons why Asian Americans benefit from working with Asian American therapists here.

On my practice blog, I’ve also written about why it’s difficult to find a high quality Asian American therapist. I’ve also written about the unique challenges faced by Asian American expats, such as reverse immigration and mental health challenges faced by Asian expats.

Finding a Good Fit in Therapy

In my experience, finding a good fit in therapy is key. This is something I know as a clinician but it’s also something I’ve experienced as a client seeking my own therapy. Yes, I too have had to do some therapist shopping to find the right fit! Finding a good fit in therapy often means that the therapist understands you in some particular way. This can take many forms, such as the following:

  • The therapist is familiar with your profession/industry.

  • The therapist understands the specific cultural context(s) you navigate.

  • The therapist has a lot of experience with or knowledge about particular symptoms or a diagnosis you’re dealing with.

  • The therapist has a lot of experience with or knowledge about a particular life experience that has impacted you.

In addition, there is something like a “vibe check” that I think is really important in the consultation and first few meetings with a therapist. You want to have good therapist-client chemistry, which will help you build trust and safety and also enjoy the therapy so that it doesn’t feel like a dental appointment or something.

Research indicates that when the therapist and client have a good relationship, outcomes tend to be better. In my training as a psychologist, I was taught that the most important factor in therapy is the relationship between the client and therapist. So we’re not just checking out the vibes for frivolous reasons—real vulnerability and healing take place in the context of a powerful and safe therapeutic space.
